Von Mac zu Mac geht es einfacher. Mit dem Dienst "Back to my Mac" kann man sich auch über NAT-Grenzen hinweg über das Internet anmelden. Apple übernimmt die Vermittlung der Verbindung mit der kostenlosen Basisversion seiner iCloud.

Auch bei den Protokollen für die Fernsteuerung gibt es Unterschiede. Die bekanntesten sind X11, VNC und RDP. VNC ist ein Protokoll, das den Bildschirminhalt ausliest und überträgt. Dabei kann es sich auch um einen virtuellen Bildschirm handeln. Dieses Prinzip macht das Protokoll universell und es kann auf jedem Betriebssystem verwendet werden. So kann man sich beispielsweise von einem PC auf einem Mac oder Linux-Rechner anmelden. Das Standard-Fernsteuerungsprotokoll bei Mac OS ist eine Erweiterung von VNC.

Allerdings ist VNC nicht besonders effizient: Es werden große Datenmengen übertragen. Zwar wird nicht immer der gesamte Bildschirminhalt gesendet, sondern nur die Differenz zum vorherigen. Trotzdem ist das Protokoll langsam - insbesondere bei hohen Latenzzeiten, obwohl die Daten in der Regel komprimiert werden.

A word of caution though…Tight VNC (or any VNC client) on your home or school network is pretty secure.  They currently are working on a more secure way to tunnel to external networks, but use it at your own risk now.  TightVNC, licensed under the GPU GPL License, is free.  When you introduce using it over the internet, you risk security risks.
