A Christmas story (or two)

Gift-giving is not the most important part of Christmas, but it provoked a minor family drama when I was a kid.
Brock's Department Store had a Santa's workshop with elves to help children select gifts. With Mom's and Dad's gifts out of the way, the helper elf was assisting me with the last one, for my sister, Heather.
I spotted a pink cat digital watch. It was perfect -- for me. Like Ralphie telling the department store Santa he wanted a football for Christmas, I nodded blankly and told my elf that my sister would love the watch.
All the gifts were wrapped, and we left the store with my mom. As we were headed home, I couldn't keep my selfish shopping a secret and blurted out the whole story, dismayed that I hadn't actually picked something out Heather would like. My mom scolded me, but I was able to pick out a real gift for my sister (and keep the watch).
